OMC has released a hermetically sealed 850 nm fibre-optic transmitter diode, which offers high-intensity output for multimode fibre coupling even in harsh environments.
Designed for applications where long-term reliability is critical, this device is as highly specialised as very few similar products available on the market globally. It is suitable for a wide range of fibre optic applications including datacomm, sensing, coding, instrumentation and signalling, ensuring speed and signal integrity for a long service life.
The FDE851HLBF 850 nm emitter features a hermetically sealed TO body with optical glass window that helps protect the interior of the device from atmospheric conditions.
The device features fast rise/fall times allowing high-speed operation in tens of MHz and contains integrated micro-optics that focus the beam to a very narrow spot offering efficient coupling in multimode glass fibre optics up to 50µm, achieving a typical launch power of 30µW at 100mA in 50/125 fibre.
Many fibre optic emitters use a transparent plastic cap that is pressed onto the header of the device. Although this provides a degree of physical protection to the LED chip, wire and internal optics, it is unusual for such a cap to provide an airtight seal, which means that the potential long-term effects of environmental characteristics, such as moisture on the device, the interior must be carefully considered in applications where long life is important.
In contrast, thehermetically sealed housing of the FDE851HLBF eliminates this variable, as air from the operating environment cannot reach the internal components.
