The IGBT/MOSFET driver with new features

Toshiba Electronics Europe has released a new IGBT/MOSFET driver with additional built-in functionality. The new TLP5231 will simplify design work in a wide range of applications including industrial inverters, uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs), power adapters for solar power and motor control.

The TLP5231 pre-driver has a pair of outputs designed to drive the external p-channel and n-channel MOSFETs used for current buffers. This allows the use of a wide variety of MOSFETs with different current ratings, which means you can control the IGBT with a rail-to-rail voltage. The driver can supply and draw peak currents up to 2.5 A and is specified for a continuous current of 1.0 A.

The device incorporates an overcurrent detection function, performed by detecting VCE(sat ) and an undervoltage lockout (UVLO) function, both of which provide an error signal in the form of an open collector to the primary side. These features are not available in existing products (such as the TLP5214 & TLP5214A) and their inclusion in the TLP5231 driver greatly simplifies the gate drive circuit design process.

In addition, it is possible to control by means of an external n-channel MOSFET the "soft gate voltageturn-off time " following the detection of an overcurrent with voltage equal to VCE(sat). The propagation delays (L/H & H/L) are as short as 100ns.

Although housed in a tiny SO16L-type surface-mount package, the TLP5231 driver offers an isolation voltage (BV) of 5000 Vrms (min.) with an internal insulation thickness of more than 0.4 mm. Insulation distances measured on the surface and in air are at least 8.0 mm, making it suitable for safety-critical applications.
