Power Integrations' GaN Technology Increases Power Output of Display Power Supplies

Power Integrations has announced the expansion of its InnoSwitch3-MX family of switching ICs, which now includes three new PowiGaN devices.

Part of a chipset featuring Power Integrations' InnoMux control IC, the new switching ICs now enable appliance and display power supplies with up to 75 W continuous output power without the need for a heatsink.

The InnoMux chipset is based on a unique single-stage power architecture that reduces losses in displays by 50 percent compared to conventional designs, increasingoverall efficiency to 91 percent in constant current and voltage LED backlight drivers. In addition, by eliminating the need for downstream regulation stages (i.e., buck and boost), TV and monitor designers can cut the number of components in half, increasing reliability and reducing manufacturing costs.

Thanks to theirhigh breakdown voltage of 750 V, PowiGan's InnoSwitch3-MX components are also extremely robust and have considerable resistance to the transient line spikes that are common in areas with unstable mains voltages.

The InnoSwitch3-MX flyback switching ICs combine the switch and controller at the primary, a synchronous rectifier controller at the secondary, and PI's innovative FluxLink high-speed communication channel. The InnoSwitch3-MX receives control instructions from the chipset's associated InnoMux IC, which independently measures the load requirements of each output and causes the switching IC to direct the correct amount of power to each output while maintaining precise current or voltage regulation.

Comments

Edward Ong, product marketing manager at Power Integrations, commented, "Using our PowiGaN technology, we are able to address the needs of higher power output applications in televisions, monitors and home appliances using LED displays. The chipset increases efficiency beyond the requirements of all mandatory standards and allows manufacturers to be allowed to display a higher class on EU efficiency labels.
