Qualcomm Technologies has announced the completion of the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard for video compression.

Qualcomm's leadership in providing technology, driving testing as well as technology development led to the completion of the standard on 6 July. The first use cases are expected in 2021.

VVC is the next generation video compression standard designed to support the creation and use of ever richer digital experiences.

With new and innovative solutions for compression, decompression, processing and coded representation of video images, audio and theircombination, the VVC standard makes video transmission more efficient and allows a 40% reduction in file size compared to the previous HEVC standard, while maintaining the same level of video quality. Compared to files with 'raw' data, VVC offers a reduction of up to 1000x.

VVC, like the 5G cellular standard, is the result of a collaborative effort between dozens of companies offering technologies and driving consensus.

"By 2022, 82 per cent of internet traffic will be video. In our connected world of Netflix, Zoom calls and video sharing, video compression is an extremely important technology that users rely on around the world," said Marta Karczewicz, vice president of technology, Qualcomm Technologies. and nominee for the European Inventor Award lifetime achievement award for her seminal work in video encoding. "The engineering team at Qualcomm Technologies played a key role in completing the standard through the contribution of our unparalleled technology and expertise."

"Qualcomm Technologies is extremely proud of the great work done by our inventors and engineers in creating the core technologies that went into the VVC standard and bringing the standard to completion in the midst of a global pandemic. Qualcomm is an IP leader in many different technology fields that facilitate people's connected experiences every day. We change the way the world connects, computes and communicates, and we are excited to enable the new video streaming possibilities that VVC offers the world," said Jim Thompson, executive vice president, engineering and chief technology officer, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.
