SupIR-SMD package for power MOSFETs enables higher performance

Consystem has launched on the Italian market the new power MOSFETs in the new SupIR-SMD package of IR Hirel by Infineon Technologies.

Reliably connecting hermetic, surface-mount power assemblies to PCBs is a common challenge faced by space system designers.

All too often, different thermal coefficients lead to an expansion mismatch of different materials.

Consystem's IR HiRel solves this problem with a family of newly qualified QPL, radiation resistant (rad hard) MOSFETs housed in an innovative direct PCB mount package, the SupIR-SMD.

the SupIR-SMD is able to connect directly to the PCB(without giving problems of ceramic cracking with related loss of hermeticity), is optimized for surface mounting and has proven to meet the most stringent reliability tests in this configuration.

The SupIR-SMD package is the key to higher performance space power systems such as satellite bus power distribution systems, payload power supplies, space-level DC-DC converters and other high-switching designs.

Compared to typical packages used in space applications, SupIR-SMD offers a 37% smaller footprint, 34% lighter mass, and 33% higher current density, while providing a more direct thermal path for heat transfer.

Traditionally, designers resort to a configuration where the packages are flipped and soldered to the PCB via wires. This type of soldering dissipates heat sub-optimally and reduces the power capability of the MOSFET.

Looking ahead, system designers can optimize power system efficiency by directly mounting the SupIR-SMD package on the PCB, allowing the shortest thermal conduction path without any compromise in system reliability.

The SupIR-SMD package is JANS qualified per MIL-PRF-19500. JANS certification is the most stringent level of requirements available to ensure the performance, quality and reliability of discrete semiconductors intended for spaceflight.

The new rad hard MOSFETs are also Q PL qualified in accordance with the Qualified Products List (QPL) for space applications.
