High-performance CMOS image sensor

ON Semiconductor (now ONSEMI) has announced the introduction of the AR0234CS 2.3Mp CMOS image sensor using 'global shutter' technology.

This high-performance sensor is designed for use in a wide range of applications including cameras for machine vision systems, augmented/virtual/mystical reality viewers, Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR) and barcode readers.

The AR0234CS captures 1080p (full HD) resolution video and single frames at a maximum rate of 120 fps (frames per second).

Thanks to itshigh shutterefficiency, this 2.3Mpixel sensor is able to produce clear and sharp images by minimising distortion between frames in high-speed scenes and reducing artefacts (i.e. alterations) caused by motion, unlike other image sensors.

Theinnovative pixelarchitecture of the AR0234CS provides the high dynamic range needed to support a variety of lighting conditions.

Reduced noise levels and improved low-light response make the new sensor suitable for use in a variety of consumer, commercial and industrial IoT applications, while the ability to operate over an extended temperature range allows it to be used in harsh outdoor installations.

The AR0234CS can be easily integrated with the AP1302 image signal processor to speed up the development process and reduce time to market.

Designers also have access to DevSuite software to evaluate sensor characteristics and capabilities, configure and fine-tune features, and provide ready-to-use results for further image processing.

Other advanced features of the new AR0234CS include programmable regions of interest (ROIs) with on-chip histograms, automatic exposure control and statistical processing engine on 5 x 5 grids, fully integrated flash illumination control, flexible row and column skip mode, horizontal and vertical mirroring, windowing (reading only selected groups of pixels) and pixel binning (combining data from adjacent pixels).

The AR0234CS is available in monochrome and colour versions, with a CRA (Chief Ray Angle) of 0° or 28°.

Comments

"The need for high quality image detection is growing steadily," explained Gianluca Colli, vice president and general manager of the Commercial Solutions Division, part of ON Semiconductor's Intelligent Solutions Group, "More and more manufacturers are automating their plants with vision-based expert systems. To meet this demand it is necessary to use a sensor that is optimised in terms of size, performance and power consumption. ON Semiconductor is one of the first manufacturers to recognise this need and has met it with the introduction of the AR0234CS.
