Analog Devices has introduced the LT8491 buck-boost controller for battery charging that features Maximum Power Point Tracking(MPPT), temperature compensation, and I2C interface for telemetry and control.

The device operates from input voltages above, below or equal to the regulated battery maintenance voltage.

The LT8491 offers three selectable constant voltage and current (CC-CV) charging profiles, making it ideal for charging a variety of battery chemistries, including sealed lead-acid, liquid electrolyte or gel cells, and Lithium Ions.

All charge termination algorithms are integrated, eliminating the need for software or firmware and thus reducing design cycle time.

The LT8491 operates over an input range of 6V to 80V and can produce a battery holding voltage of 1.3V to 80V using a single inductor with 4-switch synchronous rectification.

The device is capable of charging currents up to 10A depending on the choice of external components.

The LT8491 can be paralleled with multiple LT8705 devices (80V buck-boost controllers) for high-power operation.

The LT8491 is able to sweep the entire operating range of a solar panel, finding the true MPP (Maximum Power Point), even in the presence of local maxima due to partial panel dimming.

Once the true MPP is found, the LT8491 will operate on that point, using a dithering technique to keep track of slow variations in MPP.

With these methods, the LT8491 can use almost all the power generated by a solar panel even in less than ideal operating environments.

The LT8491 can perform automatic temperature compensation through an external thermistor thermally coupled to the battery.

The I2C interface provides full control of the charger and input/output voltage, current and power values.

The LT8491 is available in a 64-pin 7 mm x 11 mm QFN low profile (0.75 mm) package and is guaranteed to operate at temperatures between -40°C and 125°C.
