Avnet Silica has announced the availability of Miromico's FMLR-8x-x-STLx LoRa IoT modules.

These modules provide a fully Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 5.0 compatible stack using Semtech's SX1280 2.4 GHz LoRa transceiver.

The solution does not require any additional BLE 5.0 devices.

Target IoT applications include tracking and identification, building automation, construction monitoring, mining, agriculture, telemetry, remote data recording and many more.

Based onSemtech's I2.4 GHz technology, the Miromico solution provides a firmware platform that allows multiple wireless protocols, namely LoRa and BLE 5.0, to run on the same microcontroller.

The combination of both technologies in the same wireless module offers a powerful new technology tool that allows commissioning, configuration, local data monitoring or firmware updates of IoT devices via smartphones, tablets, car navigation systems or other iOS or Android-based devices.

After the initialisation process, long-range 2.4 GHz LoRa applications can be operated anywhere in the world.

For these applications requiring a dual protocol, standard IoT devices usually require the integration of separate and expensive BLE chipsets used to connect to mobile phones.

After initial configuration and installation in the field, these additional BLE chipsets become redundant.

The FMLR-8x-x-STLx family of modules is available with various optional features, such as an additional built-in flash memory that enables Over-the-Air (OTA) updates and local data buffering when cloud connectivity is temporarily unavailable.

Using the Miro Edge 2.4 GHz LoRa gateway, the modules support Semtech's high-precision active radar-based detection and location technology, ideal for indoor and outdoor environments.

Additional supported high-speed modulation schemes include FLRC and (G)FSK modes, which are very robust and bandwidth-efficient.

BLE enables two-way communication with smartphones, tablets, gadgets and more. Modules using high-precision, low-power temperature compensated oscillators (TCXO) are also available for RTC and radio applications. To support rapid prototyping and development, the module firmware, including the wireless stack, can be upgraded via SWD, UART Bootloader or optional Over-the-Air Firmware (FOTA).

Comments

"The full support for BLE 5.0 at the firmware option level offered by our SX1280-based 2.4 GHz LoRa products and modules is a game changer for developers implementing IoT technologies," said Marcel Wappler, CTO of Miromico. "It enables the development of new unique applications with very low additional costs compared to hardware-based BLE solutions. Our first goal was to provide customers with the most important BLE peripheral role, and we are pleased that Avnet Silica is now procuring BLE-ready SX1280 modules and development kits."

"Miromico is a key partner for Avnet Silica. Today, with the addition of BLE 5.0 support in Semtech's 2.4 GHz LoRa-based modules, we are opening up unique new market opportunities," said Marco Giegerich, Director Business Development EMEA at Avnet Silica.
