New GMR speed sensor with many options

Allegro MicroSystems, distributed in Italy by Consystem, has introduced a new GMR (giant magnetoresistance) speed sensor that measures the rotation of ferromagnetic gears (gear teeth).

The ATS19480 speed sensor (an IC) provides an ideal single-channel solution for hybrid and purely electric vehicle transmissions, with use cases extending to two-wheelers, off-road vehicles and industrial application projects requiring only speed information.

Combining GMR's advanced technology with leading automotive-grade algorithms and packaging technology, Allegro now offers a complete portfolio of state-of-the-art transmission sensors that meet the needs of today's developers and system manufacturers, while leveraging the company's 20 years of experience in speed sensing, application-specific expertise and technological advancement.

The device adds a speed-only protocol, recently released by Allegro, to the ATS19580 speed and direction sensor IC, setting a new standard for speed sensing and allowing developers to achieve the highest levels of capability and adaptability in the system.

With an industry-leading air gap that is 50% larger than existing options, it improves design flexibility, expands design margin and tolerance capability, and facilitates a wider range of sensor installation locations.

This helps to reduce system complexity, size, weight, cost and energy consumption, increasing efficiency and minimising the carbon footprint.

The ATS19480 sensor follows Allegro's recent release of the dual-channel ATS19580 IC, the industry's first fully integrated GMR speed and direction sensor that offers superior vibration immunity in applications such as automotive transmissions.

Both sensors complement Allegro's fully-integrated ATS19420 and ATS19520 Hall-effect speed sensors, as well as the company's family of front-polarized Hall-effect and GMR products for magnetic target detection.

High integration and superior algorithms improve performance

Monolithic integration allows the ATS19480 sensor to achieve outstanding in-system performance and highly accurate speed detection.

The fully integrated single overmoulded package reduces design complexity and simplifies the development process.

Allowing flexible design and system compensation, the three-pin Single Inline Package ( SIP ) houses the IC, magnet and EMC protection.

The precision assembly optimises IC-to-magnet positioning, as the reduced tolerance stack between the IC and magnet increases sensor accuracy and leaves ample room for installation tolerance in the application.

Advanced signal compensation eliminates flatline conditions caused by system dynamics and differential detection protects against common-mode stray fields.

The ATS19480 includes built-in ASIL B diagnostics and a certified safety design process for optional fault reporting and superior operation in harsh operating conditions that can help reduce failure rates, along with customer returns and warranty claims.

Comments

"As our newest GMR single-chip solution for gear tooth detection, the ATS19480 optimises performance for emerging electric vehicle applications. It isunique to the market and outperforms competing technologies due to its high air gap and level of accuracy," says Peter Wells, Magnetic Speed Business Unit Director at Allegro. "Our new speed sensor allows designers to do things that have not been possible until now. It can be placed virtually anywhere; drives can be smaller and lighter than ever before, which is particularly important in applications where designers want the speed-only protocol. It's a real game-changer.
