Tektronix has announced the launch of the latest version of its award-winning 5 Series mixed-signal oscilloscopes.

Thanks to a number of improvements, the newMixed Signal Oscilloscopes (MS Os ) offer even greater versatility, while retaining all the features that designers around the world have come to appreciate, including high waveform fidelity, extensive spectrum analysis capabilities and flexible signal access.

Building on the performance and integrity levels that made the original 5 Series MSOs so successful, the B version features user-focused upgrades, starting with a new auxiliary trigger input that allows users to synchronise the oscilloscope with an external signal without using any of the 4, 6 or 8 input channels available on the instrument.

As for the integrated function/arbitrate generator (optional), the maximum output frequency is doubled from 50 to 100 MHz to allow the generation of higher frequency signals, useful for impedance measurements or Bode diagrams, for example.

These features are extremely important in order to perform quick and comprehensive power integrity checks of Power Distribution Networks (PDNs).

To meet the needs of engineers working and collaborating outside a laboratory, the MSO 5 Series B version supports new tools for offline analysis and cloud-based data storage.

The TekScope PC software allows analysis of waveform data displayed on the oscilloscope without the need to be physically close to the instrument.

Controls are built into the oscilloscope that allow it to be saved to TekDrive, the company's cloud storage solution, at the touch of a button.

Users can easily save waveform data to the cloud, allowing teams to work and collaborate wherever they are in the world.

A faster processor helps not only to increase the responsiveness of the controls, but also to support the new, more complex measures that will be added in the near future.

Other notable features include the following:

  • A new, brighter display ensures greater clarity, clearly showing the details of the waveforms sampled by the instrument's 12-bit A/D converters.
  • The'History' mode takes advantage of the larger memory of the B version, allowing users to capture thousands of trigger events and easily review them for events of interest.
  • Solid State Drive (SSD) which ensures that all user data is stored on a removable drive. This is an important feature in laboratories where the integrity of measurement data is mission-critical.

TheB version is an update to the original MSO 5 Series, which was introduced in 2017 and received excellent feedback from designers, who appreciated the large display and the integration of a touchscreen-type user interface that supports pinch (two-finger zoom in and out), drag (drag) and swipe functionality.

Both the original Series 5 and the new Series 5 version B are equipped with low-capacity passive probes with bandwidths up to 1 GHz and support a wide range of probes, including power rail probes and isolated probes such as IsoVu isolated probes, which allow common-mode interference to be eliminated by optical isolation.

Since the introduction of the original Series 5, Tektronix has released 16 firmware updates, each adding new features that have collectively helped expand the instruments' measurement applications in areas such as serial protocol decoding, drive analysis and RF spectrum analysis.

Comments

"The setup of the MSO 5 Series was really intuitive," confirmed Wyatt Callister, Associate Test Engineer, Product Support Development at Schwizer Eingineering Laboratories. "While navigating through the menus on previous generations of scopes could be quite difficult, the large, informative and functional buttons on this new scope were very helpful. I particularly appreciate the continued evolution of the Tektronix offering and the improved features that have just been released."

"We are particularly pleased to introduce the latest update to one of our most innovative product series" - said Suchi Srinivasan, Product Line General Manager at Tektronix. "The new B version of the 5 Series stands out for its particularly intuitive operation and the ability to perform advanced measurements that teams can use wherever they are thanks to our cloud storage software solution Tekdrive."
