Microchip Technology has announced the next-generationMPLAB ICE 4 In-Circuit Emulator, the programming development and debugging tool for the company's PIC and AVR microcontrollers (MCUs), dsPIC digital signal controllers (DSCs) and SAM MCUs and microprocessors (MPUs).

Today's embedded engineers are looking for comprehensive design analysis for rapid development and require easy-to-use yet powerful emulation hardware, and the MPLAB ICE 4 In-Circuit Emulator is Microchip's fastest and most feature-rich emulation and programming tool for its MCUs and MPUs, debugging and programming with the powerful and easy-to-use graphical user interface of the MPLAB X Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

The MPLAB ICE 4 In-Circuit Emulator offers aflexible development experience that includes advanced debugging capabilities for writing low-power code along with all the features needed to reduce debugging time.

The MPLAB ICE 4 In-Circuit Emulator connects via SuperSpeed USB 3.0 or High-Speed USB 2.0 with anoption to go wireless via Ethernet or Wi-Fi connectivity for flexibility and ease of use.

The system provides Ethernet or Wi-Fi connectivity for seamless wireless programming and debugging. Ethernet connectivity provides remote debugging for applications monitored over long distances. In addition, Wi-Fi connectivity is excellent for providing isolation from environmental conditions such as high voltage motor control applications or floating systems without ground loops.

MPLAB ICE 4's powerful hardware integrates with MPLAB X's CI/CD configuration over Ethernet to create an effective combination for looping hardware. Designers can use the CI/CD wizard to configure Jenkins and Docker on the latest version of MPLAB X IDE v6.00.

The system has power debugging capabilities to monitor how power consumption is related to the code using MPLAB Data Visualizer.

In addition, embedded engineers can 'extract more' from the code by using two independent current sensing channels with varying resolutions to measure and optimise the power consumption of a design.

Engineers can reduce development time by using the advanced features of the MPLAB ICE 4 In-Circuit Emulator that support many widely used tools and instruction tracking capabilities. The numerous debugging and programming interfaces and ICE 4's options for target connections using adapter boards further help reduce development time.

MPLAB ICE 4 In-Circuit Emulator debugs and programs all Microchip MCUs, DSCs and MPUs, simplifying the design process when developers migrate from one Microchip MCU or MPU to another.

With the latest hardware, full device support, multiple functionalities, reliability and seamless integration with the latest version of MPLAB X IDE v6.00, it provides a complete development system.

In addition to Microchip's free proprietary software, MPLAB X IDE for embedded applications, the company provides a full range of free optimising compilers, professional-level compiler licences, functional safety licences and code coverage licences for developers.

Comments

"Engineers can expand their development capabilities with this powerful, all-in-one system that offers new possibilities and applications with advanced hardware and wireless connectivity options," said Rodger Richey, senior director of Microchip's development systems business unit. "Together with advanced power monitoring capabilities, embedded designers can simultaneously optimise hardware and software for a complete, energy-efficient design."
