NXPSemiconductors announced that NXP's Layerscape and Layerscape Access family of processors has been selected by Compal Electronics, one of the world's largest ODMs, for its new 5G Integrated Small Cell (ISC) solution.

Designed to improve the density of 5G networks, the new solution offers high-performance capabilities based on a 4-antenna configuration to enable new 5G use cases.
These include smart cities and smart factories, enhanced indoor 5G coverage and low-latency applications, across public and private networks.

5G network signals fade quickly, particularly through walls or over long distances.

Small cells are needed to boost the networksignal so that coverage can be extended to indoor spaces or dense urban areas.

The Compal ISC solution offers the high performance needed to improve network density, while also providing the low-latency performance that users expect from a 5G connection.

Compal's ISC solution leverages the NXP Layerscape portfolio, including Layerscape multi-core processors and the Layerscape Access LA1200 programmable baseband processor.

Layerscape multicore processors provide high levels of integration and utilise 64-bit Arm cores, while Layerscape Access programmable baseband processors offer unprecedented flexibility through programmable PHY/baseband processing engines.

The entire system offers efficient and scalable performance exceeding data rates of 1 Gbps through software defined radio implementation.

Compal's ISC solution, together with NXP's software programmable modem, is scheduled for deployment in the Asia New Bay Area of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, for its 5G Innovation Lab, which focuses on implementing R&D (research and development) results by conducting field validation and promoting commercialisation. Its deployment in Japan is expected in the second half of 2022.

Comments

JS Liang, Vice President of Compal commented: "Our collaboration with NXP enables us to leverage the high performance of Layerscape processors to meet the growing need for higher capacity and wider availability of 5G networks. The 4T4R ISC solution enables a wide range of new applications and revenue streams for mobile network operators and private network service providers.

Tareq Bustami, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Network Edge at NXP Semiconductors said: "Partnering with Compal to create this new high-performance solution underscores the strength of the NXP Layerscape portfolio to accelerate 5G deployments. This software programmable solution addresses the challenge of 5G network enhancements, particularly for smart cities and smart factories.
