New LDO regulators for the automotive sector

ROHM presents new automotive LDO regulator IC s characterised by stable operation with electrical output capability at the nanoscale.

The BD9xxN1 series (BD950N1G-C, BD933N1G-C, BD900N1G-C, BD950N1WG-C, BD933N1WG-C, BD900N1WG-C) is optimised for primary power supplies (directly at 12 V) in a wide range of applications, including powertrain, body, ADAS and car infotainment systems.

In recent years, the constant digitisation of all types of equipment has only increased the number of electronic components, a factor that in turn drives the need to reduce the number of capacitors used to stabilise circuits in order to limit both size and bill of materials.

This requires power supply ICs capable of achieving stable operation with small capacitors, but until now it had been difficult to achieve stable operation in applications with electrical output capacitances of 1 µF or less.

To meet these demands, in 2020 ROHM developed the ultra-stable Nano Cap control technology designed for power ICs.

Being able to rely on this technology allows designers to develop LDO controllers that ensure stable operation even with ultra-small, nanoscale electrical output capacitances.

This results in the support of an electrical output capacitance in the order of 100 nF, 1/10th of the value of standard products, which ensures the stability of operation required by applications (output voltage variation within 100 mV: the condition is 1 mA - 50 mA/1 µs load current variation), even in the presence of input voltage and load current fluctuations.

In addition to common MLCCs (multilayer ceramic capacitors) in the µF range and electrolytic capacitors with large electrical capacitances, ROHM's new regulators can handle a very wide range of electrical output capacitances down to 1 µF or even less in the ultra-compact 0603/0402 size (which had not been usable in the past due to insufficient stability), thus contributing not only to the miniaturisation of components and boards, but also to the reduction of design resources required when supporting a wider range of capacitor conditions.

For the future, ROHM intends to expand the series of LDO regulators with integrated Nano Cap technology to 22 models with different output voltages and packages. This will be followed by a further 24 models with 500 mA output current, making a total of 46 products with even greater applicability.

What is Nano Cap Technology?

The name Nano Cap refers to an ultra-stable control technology achieved through advanced analogue expertise by bringing together circuit design, processes and layouts, and relying on ROHM's vertically integrated manufacturing system.

Control stability eliminates the problem of operational instability related to capacitors in analogue circuits, contributing to a reduction in design resources in a wide range of applications in the automotive, industrial equipment, consumer and various other sectors.

New product specifications

The new BD9xxN1 series of automotive primary LDOs fulfils the basic requirements for automotive products, e.g. operation at temperatures above 125 °C, qualification of compliance with the AEC-Q100 standard for automotive reliability, and input voltages above 40 V for the primary power supply.

The incorporation of ROHM's ultra-stable Nano Cap control technology enables thedelivery of an electrical output capacitance in the order of 100 nF, less than 1/10th of the value of standard products, which ensures the stability of operation required by applications (output voltage variation within 100 mV: the condition is 1 mA ⇔ 50 mA/1 µs load current variation), even in the presence of input voltage and load current fluctuations.

This helps to provide a high performance with a good balance in terms of output electrical capacitance range and response characteristics.
