New fast recovery diodes ensure low losses and ultra-low noise

ROHM has developed the fourth-generation 650 V RFL/RFS series of fast recovery diodes (FRDs), which feature low direct voltage (VF) and fast reverse recovery time (trr), respectively, as well as ultra-low noise characteristics.

The new devices are ideal for industrial and consumer equipment that handles large amounts of power, such as air conditioners and electric vehicle charging stations.

More efficient use of electricity has become necessary in recent years in order to cope with the increase in power consumption globally.

Especially important aspect for large household appliances and industrial equipment that handle large amounts of power, such as electric vehicle charging stations.

These require not only high electrical efficiency, but also the reduction of workload, when measures to counter noise imply the opposite in circuit design.

To meet this need, ROHM has developed diodes that combine low VF, for more efficient operation, with fast trr characteristics, which ensure lower losses and ultra-low noise during deactivation.

Optimization of device structure and materials enables the RFL/RFS series to achieve the optimal balance between VF and trr, characteristics that are fundamental to FRDs but are in a balancing relationship.

The low-VF RFL series reduces VF by about 3.2% and trr by about 8.3% compared with the conventional RFN series, while the high-speed RFS series reduces VF by about 17.9% compared with the conventional RFUH series.

Both products contribute to better energy efficiency through circuit-optimized design.

In addition, diode recovery characteristics are achieved that ensure ultra-low noise and help reduce both the workload and the components used to limit noise.
