Mouser Electronics recently announced several new development kits, prototyping platforms, and satellite wireless connectivity modules for the IoT.

Getting ahead of the competition is critical for product engineering teams tasked with designing IoT solutions.

The availability of well-documented, comprehensive, wirelessly connected development kits helps speed up prototyping.

Instead of being burdened with hardware-related decisions, the engineering team can focus on the features that differentiate the products.

The recently announced IoT development kits and connectivity modules available from Mouser include:

Astrocast is a satellite IoT connectivity service provider. In addition to the IoT service, the company also provides a highly integrated satellite IoT wireless module to enable two-way communication with the Astrocast network. The Astronode S L-band satellite communication module uses a low-power Arm Cortex-M33 microcontroller and a proprietary wireless ASIC. Communication with the application host is via a simple UART interface. Typical applications include resource tracking, ocean buoy monitoring, precision agriculture, global weather data, and system condition monitoring.

STMicroelectronics' STEVAL-STWINBX1 development kit is ideal for prototyping a wide range of industrial IoT sensing applications, such as condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. Based on the ultra-low-power Arm Cortex-M33 STM32U585AI microcontroller with floating-point unit, the kit features a comprehensive list of sensors suitable for industrial applications and is packaged in an enclosure with a 480 mAh LiPo battery. Sensors include a 3-axis ultra-wideband, low-noise digital vibration sensing sensor, a 3-axis magnetometer with integrated accelerometer and gyroscope, and an iNEMO inertial measurement unit. Environmental sensors include a digital barometer, a temperature sensor, and analog and digital microphones. Complementing the various hardware features are firmware libraries and a cloud-based application.

Based on Nordic Semiconductor's Arm Cortex M-33 dual-core nRF5340 unit, Nordic Semiconductor's Thingy:53 is a low-power platform that supports several 2.4 GHz wireless protocols, assists the development of machine learning embedded with the nRF Edge Impulse application, and includes debugging and current measurement capabilities. Built-in environmental sensors measure temperature, humidity, air quality and pressure, and also include color and light sensors. A low-power accelerometer and a 6-axis inertial measurement unit complete the range of sensors in the Thingy:53 platform. The platform's machine learning capabilities support a range of applications, including speech recognition and motion pattern detection. Other features of the platform include an integrated power management circuit, an nRF21540 wireless front-end module, and an integrated low-noise power amplifier/amplifier (PA/LNA).

For developers who wish to add facial recognition and 2D or 3D vital sign detection to their IoT device, NXP's SLN-VIZNAS development kit is the ideal solution for designing an offline ready-to-use application for a wide range of residential, industrial, hospitality, and access control product applications. Equipped with NXP's i.MX RT117F crossover processor, running at speeds up to 1 GHz, the kit can run NXP's i.MX RT runtime library for 3D face recognition, which includes image acquisition, alignment, tracking, face detection and recognition, and vital sign detection capabilities. The SLN-VIZN3D-IOT kit also includes a remote recording feature that allows end users to record their own faces from mobile devices.
